Since 1632 La Bocca della Verita, a cracked marble disk shape face image, could be found in the portico of church Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. According to Romans belief, the Bocca represents the picture of traditional God Oceanus of stream Tiber. In English language, Bocca della Verita means Mouth of Truth. Its unique name is an indicator of its famous characteristic to give the clear and apparent sworn statement in the favour of honest person and to punish a liar by biting off his / her hand. It was thought that if an individual is telling a lie while placing his hand in the mouth of Bocca, must be bitten off as a punishment and proof of his sin.

Robert Silverberg has additionally utilised the unique credibility of Bocca in his novel, Nightwings. This novel was also credited with Hugo Award.
